About Provenance - Painting With Light

About the Hash Numbers of Prints by John Neville Cohen

The SHA?256 hash values for each artwork in the Painting With Light collection. These hashes form the digital provenance record stored on the blockchain and included on each certificate of authenticity.

Generating the Hash

The SHA?256 hash is created from the digital image file of each artwork. Using an online SHA?256 generator. The image is uploaded and the Hash is generated, this Hash number is then timestamped and recorded on the blockchain and a .ots file is created.

This ensures a consistent, verifiable fingerprint for every artwork.

Why the Hash Matters

A SHA?256 hash is a unique digital fingerprint of the artwork’s image file. Even the smallest change - a single pixel or metadata edit - produces a completely different hash number. This makes the provenance record tamper?proof.

By storing the hash both on the blockchain and on the certificate:
  • The artwork’s authenticity can be verified at any time.
  • Any attempt to alter or duplicate the image becomes detectable.
  • Collectors and institutions gain permanent cryptographic proof of origin.
This protects the integrity of each edition.

Verify the Timestamp

Each edition is independently timestamped using a decentralised verification system. The timestamp file is also available upon request and is used to confirm authenticity.

Visit: https://opentimestamps.org Upload the .ots file provided with your edition details and the site will confirm that the timestamp is valid.

Integration with “Painting With Light”

This provenance system forms the digital backbone of the Painting With Light collection. Each artwork’s hash links the physical print to a permanent blockchain record, ensuring authenticity can be confirmed instantly.

By combining analogue projection photography with cryptographic verification, the project bridges traditional artistry and modern technology. The result is a transparent, tamper proof provenance trail that reinforces the uniqueness and historical value of every edition.

Edition & Resale Terms

These artworks are part of a strictly limited edition of 8 prints. On any subsequent resale, the artist (John Neville Cohen) receives a 20% resale royalty. Provenance must be updated and the royalty paid prior to transfer of ownership. This condition forms part of the certificate of authenticity and applies to all future transfers.
